The Aldinga Community Centre welcomes all members of the community...........
Established since July 1981 the Aldinga Community Centre fills a community need by providing the following:
Please feel welcome to drop in and visit us weekdays from 8.30am till 3.30pm during school terms. We also have a creche facility during some courses. Please enquire at reception.
COMMUNITY SHED OPEN The Aldinga Bay Community Shed is now open & is offering arange of courses this term including Pottery, Mosaics & Leadlighting. The Shed will have a Craft Day open for everyone on Tuesdays each week, and volunteer instructors will teach local school students, plus assist carers, the disabled and disadvantaged groups in the area. It will also cater for mature aged men with carpentry and metal work sections. The Shed Committee would like to hear from residents as to which courses they would like. Volunteer instructors are also required for carpentry, craft, woodwork and metalwork. You just need to be a good handyman to help at the shed. Contact Roger or Bob on 8556 5940.
Community Shed News Everyone is welcome and a delicious morning tea will follow the opening. Please let the Community Centre know if you are attending so we can make sure everyone is catered for. The Shed is the brainchild of a group of local men who realised the need for a meeting place, where local residents, particularly mature-aged men could interact, reducing social isolation. It is also a great facility that is available for everyone for a wide range of courses and activities.
The three levels of government funded the Shed and its extensive fit out. The Shed Committee has worked extremely hard to help co-ordinate and plan construction of the shed and to do a total fit out for wood, metal work and clay & pottery work. They are looking for people with the skills and time to help tutor or run courses in the Shed.
A Craft Day was held on Tuesdays last term and several courses were held which were very successful. An upgraded Leadlighting and Pottery class will be held this term as participants from last term wanted to continue to improve their skills.
This term the following courses will be held: Ceramics, Car Maintenance, Leadlighting, Pottery, Woodturning. The committee has lots of great plans for later in the year including courses in : Carpentry and How to safely use power tools also Home maintenance. A Volunteer Co-Ordinator is also required for the Shed. If you are interested please contact the Centre. This position meets the Centrelink requirements for volunteering in an approved agency. Now the Shed is operational it is available on a session at a time basis for groups to hire.
The Shed Committee has done a great job with the Shed so make sure you come and use it and support it.
Creche Our Creche has the following facilities.
VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are required for the office, to help in the crèche & literacy and numeracy tutors. This is a great opportunity to help your community and meet local residents. Volunteers can earn tokens, which are redeemable to cover costs of some of the Centre’s courses. Contact Averil 8556 5940
Halls For Hire Sellicks Community Hall and Symonds Reserve Hall are available for hire 7 days a week for functions and private meetings. Please call the centres for further information.

About Us
Aldinga Community Centre History
The Aldinga Community Centre Incorporated began operations in July 1981 in a house opposite Aldinga Kindergarten on Butterworth Road. It was known then as the Aldinga Neighbourhood House and was funded by the Save the Children Fund for its first 12 months. It was seen as a meeting place for parents and children. By 1982, it had changed location to another house in Butterworth Road, employed a qualified child-care worker and operated a vacation care program.
Having to pay its own rental, fund-raising became a vital issue but assistance was obtained from the District Council of Willunga. At one stage it even shared premises with the local CYSS (Community Youth Support Services) to reduce costs.
In July 1983 the House had successfully qualified for a Federal grant for a purpose -built centre, but it took 3 years and 2 moves before this centre was occupied. The House was temporarily located in Eden Terrace, Port Willunga at one stage and in Kitto Crescent, Aldinga Beach at another.
Early 1986 saw the House occupying a building complete with a purpose-built creche, adjacent to the Kindergarten on Symonds Reserve (now Aldinga Community Child Care Centre). Attendances of both adults and children increased, however, the need for child care in the area began to dominate and as the creche changed from occasional care to full day care with fee relief, the child care side of the house began to take over.
Eventually the Neighbourhood House left the building altogether and began operations in Symonds Reserve Hall in 1989. The split was amicable and meant that both services could expand.
It was at this time that the House became known as Aldinga Community Centre Incorporated. In 1992, the Centre was successful in gaining a Federal grant for a purpose-built creche and, together with Council funds, the building was extended.
In July 1994, the Centre was offered full management of the Hall by the District Council of Willunga.
From a small, day a week operation in a rented house, a 45 place full day care centre has emerged as well as a Community Centre. Together with occasional care, the Centre now provides creche and adult services for over 400 clients per week.
The building and its surrounds have had a number of alterations over the years to make it more suitable for use as a Community Centre, thanks to funding from Council and Community Benefit SA.
Mid 2006 the Aldinga Bay Community Shed group was formed in a bid to establish a Community Shed on Symonds Reserve, the Council owned land on which the Community Centre is located. Permission to use the land has been granted from Council and 4 grants successfully obtained; two from Community Benefit SA, a budget bid from the City of Onkaparinga and a Regional Partnerships grant from the Federal; Government. Construction of the shed commenced in February, 2008.
In February 2007 the Centre was given management of Sellicks Hall by the City of Onkaparinga. The Centre employs a part time Community Development Officer to run Sellicks Hall as an outreach Community Centre.
