The Aldinga Community Centre Incorporated began operations in July 1981 in a house opposite Aldinga Kindergarten on Butterworth Road. It was known then as the Aldinga Neighbourhood House and was funded by the Save the Children Fund for its first 12 months. It was seen as a meeting place for parents and children. By 1982, it had changed location to another house in Butterworth Road, employed a qualified child-care worker and operated a vacation care program.
Having to pay its own rental, fund-raising became a vital issue but assistance was obtained from the District Council of Willunga. At one stage it even shared premises with the local CYSS (Community Youth Support Services) to reduce costs.
In July 1983 the House had successfully qualified for a Federal grant for a purpose -built centre, but it took 3 years and 2 moves before this centre was occupied. The House was temporarily located in Eden Terrace, Port Willunga at one stage and in Kitto Crescent, Aldinga Beach at another.
Early 1986 saw the House occupying a building complete with a purpose-built creche, adjacent to the Kindergarten on Symonds Reserve (now Aldinga Community Child Care Centre). Attendances of both adults and children increased, however, the need for child care in the area began to dominate and as the creche changed from occasional care to full day care with fee relief, the child care side of the house began to take over.
Eventually the Neighbourhood House left the building altogether and began operations in Symonds Reserve Hall in 1989. The split was amicable and meant that both services could expand.
It was at this time that the House became known as Aldinga Community Centre Incorporated. In 1992, the Centre was successful in gaining a Federal grant for a purpose-built creche and, together with Council funds, the building was extended.
In July 1994, the Centre was offered full management of the Hall by the District Council of Willunga.
From a small, day a week operation in a rented house, a 45 place full day care centre has emerged as well as a Community Centre. Together with occasional care, the Centre now provides creche and adult services for over 400 clients per week.
The building and its surrounds have had a number of alterations over the years to make it more suitable for use as a Community Centre, thanks to funding from Council and Community Benefit SA.
Mid 2006 the Aldinga Bay Community Shed group was formed in a bid to establish a Community Shed on Symonds Reserve, the Council owned land on which the Community Centre is located. Permission to use the land has been granted from Council and 4 grants successfully obtained; two from Community Benefit SA, a budget bid from the City of Onkaparinga and a Regional Partnerships grant from the Federal; Government. Construction of the shed commenced in February, 2008.
In February 2007 the Centre was given management of Sellicks Hall by the City of Onkaparinga. The Centre employs a part time Community Development Officer to run Sellicks Hall as an outreach Community Centre.
